More on the New & Improved Rotacaster Omni-wheels
I received a a new batch of Rotacaster Omni-wheels several weeks ago which look and work fantastic. I gave them a good test run way back on 15th June 2011 and videoed my results. It's a while, but here they are fitted to a Killough type platform powered by LEGO Mindstorms NXT kit fitted with 3x NXT Motors to drive the Rotacasters.
The Grey Rollers on the Rotacasters used here are very soft and sticky, working well on very smooth surfaces. But, they will ware easily on abrasive surfaces. They work well were precision is required.
In the Video below, the Killough type platform is also powered by LEGO Mindstorms NXT kit, but fitted with 3x Large Power Function Motors to drive the Rotacasters instead. Using the PF Motors result in a more compact Robot platform than if using NXT type Motors as is shown in the Video above.
The Orange Rollers on the Rotacasters used here are harder and are o.k. for abrasive surfaces. They tend to slide somewhat on very smooth surfaces.
This batch of Rotacasters are the Quality you have come to expect from LEGO themselves. The time, money & effort Rotacaster has put into getting these LEGO Technic and Mindstorms Compatible omni-wheels has paid off. The new wheels don't only look great, but the rollers which allow the wheel to move sideways have are very free moving compared to the earlier prototypes I received.
Gone are the hassles with rollers binding!
Congratulations Rotacaster on a an amazing piece of engineer, which every serious LEGO fanatic needs in their spare parts kit!
